The Path to Success for the Young Entrepreneur
There is a growing population of younger people with great ideas who are turning them into successful business ventures. Today’s young entrepreneurs, according to Sharon Jayson, of USA Today, “Are at the leading edge of a trend toward entrepreneurship that has bubbled for decades and now, thanks in large part to technology, is starting to surge.”
Although there are a few special things for the young entrepreneur to consider, in general, the keys starting a successful business are the same.
- Have a passion for or believe in your product or service. Especially at a young age, it is very important that you do something you like, so that you don’t burn out too soon.
- Be prepared for the time and effort developing a product and running a business entails. It takes a commitment and prioritizing on your part.
- Develop a plan to implement your idea. This gives you a map to follow, but also can explain your business to potential financial donors and/or employees.
- Monitor your progress. Keep track of tasks, what works, and what doesn’t. Ignoring an issue won’t make it disappear. You can always make changes.
- Find and work with a mentor or counselor. “Many industry leaders and managers attribute their success to mentors,” comments business writer Lynn Johnson.
- Take advantage of your resources. Not only can your family and friends help you, but more recognition is being given to young people looking to succeed in business. SCORE.org, just to name one, offers a full menu of business advice and resources geared to the young entrepreneur.
Whether you succeed or fail in your first attempt, continue to pursue your dreams in business. The most important step, for the experienced and young entrepreneur alike, is take action to turn your vision into reality.
