Social Entrepreneurship: A Successful Combination
As government and private funding sources for non-profits decrease, there is a greater need for additional methods of generating support for non-profit causes.
In "The Meaning of Social Entrepreneurship", J. Gregory Dees says, "An increasing number of forward-looking nonprofits are beginning to appreciate the increased revenue, focus and effectiveness that can come from adopting ‘for profit’ business approaches. Increasingly, they are reinventing themselves as social entrepreneurs, combining "the passion of a social mission with an image of business-like discipline, innovation, and determination."
Social entrepreneurship combines social responsibility with the mindset of the entrepreneur. The entrepreneurial characteristics of seeking opportunity in all situations, and the drive to succeed are essential for “for-profit” businesses… and now those involved in the non-profit sector are discovering these same characteristics will help them succeed also.
