Business Courses Can Give You Versatility

Pamela Slim from Escape From Cubicle Nation recently posted a great article addressing recent college graduates about business, the economy and career choices.

Slim noted that although some graduates have business degrees chocked full of business courses of all varieties, yet they don't land the perfect job in their area of study.  They shouldn’t be discouraged.

In an uncertain economy it can be tempting to play it safe and stick to the rules, but take Slim’s advice:

  • You can work in a field that you didn’t study.  It can be disconcerting but pursuing something you enjoy – even if it’s not something you actually studied – can be more rewarding than what you had originally planned.
  • Focus on the journey not just the destination.  When something doesn’t turn out as planned instead of asking, “Why me?” ask “How can I improve the next time?”
  • You don’t need permission to pursue opportunities.  Many people refuse to pursue new opportunities until they’ve stayed in a particular position for a certain number of years.  Although experience is valuable, pursuing new possibilities has no time frame.

There are many unspoken rules to life and sometimes you even have to break those.
