The Riches Of An Amateur Hobby

Small Biz Labs gave a great perspective on amateurs becoming professionals recently.  Technology has become so affordable and available to the average person, and as a result competition in a variety of industries has really heated up.

The amateur photographer (with a basic camera) becoming a real competition to professional photographers with state of the art cameras is one example.

People with varying degrees of experience and maybe even skill are producing comparable work – and this is leveling the playing field.  Small Biz Labs found that it no longer matters if you are pursuing a field as a professional for wealth or as an amateur for the riches of pure enjoyment.

Their research found that in 2007 and 2008 - U.S. personal businesses increased by more than 2 million.  Many in this group started as part-time business owners or hobbyists.

According to Small Biz Labs, often it’s no longer necessary to pursue a trade in which you have been formally educated.  In many areas an amateur has as much of an opportunity as a professional.

If you’re looking for a good idea for a business startup, take a look at what you enjoy doing, and your good idea might turn into a great business.
